Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI is preparing to launch its highly anticipated GPT-5 model as early as August, according to a report from The Verge citing sources familiar with the company's plans.
Unlike previous iterations of the GPT series, GPT-5 will not rely on a single monolithic model. Instead, it will function as a more dynamic and flexible AI system that integrates several distinct models, each capable of handling different types of tasks. This multi-model structure marks a significant shift in how OpenAI approaches artificial intelligence, aiming to create more specialized and efficient tools under one cohesive framework.
The upcoming GPT-5 will incorporate OpenAI’s o3 model, part of the "o-series" of tools introduced earlier this year, alongside other internal technologies. CEO Sam Altman previously stated that the company’s goal is to merge the GPT and o-series lines into a unified system, enabling users to benefit from all available AI capabilities through a streamlined interface.
This consolidation is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to reduce complexity in its product lineup and enhance the versatility of its AI offerings. With GPT-5, users may gain access to a system that can perform a broader spectrum of tasks, from text generation and summarization to more advanced problem-solving, reasoning, and even code execution.
While sources suggest the release is slated for early August, it's worth noting that OpenAI’s timelines are often fluid. The company has a history of adjusting release dates in response to development hurdles, server scalability concerns, or competitive pressures, especially in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
At the time of reporting, OpenAI had not issued an official statement confirming the launch date.
