What Does Margin Level Mean and How Is It Calculated?

In trading, margin level is one of the most important metrics to monitor, as it helps you understand the overall health of your account. It indicates how much of your equity is being used to support your open positions, and how much margin is still available to open new trades or sustain market movements.

How Margin Level Works

The margin level is expressed as a percentage and is calculated using this formula:

Margin Level = (Equity / Used Margin) × 100

  • Equity

is your account balance plus any floating profit or loss from open positions.

  • Used Margin

is the amount currently allocated to keep those positions open.

For example, if you have $1,000 in equity and $500 in used margin, your margin level is:

(1000 / 500) × 100 = 200%

Why It Matters

A high margin level (e.g. 500% or more) usually means your positions are well-covered and your account is in a stable condition. However, a low margin level (e.g. below 100% or 50%) is a red flag that you're getting close to a margin call or even a stop-out where your positions might be closed automatically to prevent further losses.

Keeping a close eye on your margin level helps you manage risk and maintain control of your trades.
